Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a stay at Expo Hostel & Cottage in Nishijin, Kyoto? Here are a few common questions about our Hostel, Cottage, neighborhood, facilities, and check-in.

The Hostel & Cottage

What is the difference between the Hostel and the Cottage?

The Hostel offers private rooms within a shared house. Guests have their own room, while the kitchen, lounge, showers, and everyday spaces are shared. The Cottage is a fully private house — your own living room, kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms, with no one else to share it. It suits families, groups, and guests who want a home to themselves.

Are the Hostel rooms private?

Yes. Each guest in the Hostel has their own private room. This is not a dormitory. Shared facilities — kitchen, lounge, showers — are used by all guests in the Hostel.

What facilities are shared in the Hostel?

Shared facilities include the kitchen, lounge, shower rooms, bathroom, and common areas. Wi-Fi and laundry access are also available. Private rooms are your own space; the shared areas are for all Hostel guests.

Is the Cottage fully private?

Yes. The Cottage is a standalone private house. You have exclusive use of the entire space — living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms — for the duration of your stay. No shared areas with other guests.

Location & Neighborhood

Is Nishijin close to the main tourist areas in Kyoto?

Nishijin is a residential weaving district in the northwest of central Kyoto. It is quieter and more local than the busiest tourist areas, and that is part of why guests choose it. Most major sites in Kyoto are reachable by city bus, bicycle, or a short local transit connection. Kinkaku-ji, Kitano Tenman-gū, and Daitoku-ji are close. Arashiyama, Gion, and Kyoto Station take a bit longer but are manageable.

Is the area convenient for daily life?

Yes. Nishijin has supermarkets, convenience stores, a neighborhood bakery, cafés, restaurants, and a pharmacy within easy reach. Funaoka Onsen, one of Kyoto's oldest public bathhouses, is about three minutes on foot. It is a functional neighborhood where guests can cook, shop, and settle into a daily rhythm without needing to go far.

Bicycles

Are bicycles available?

Bicycles are included with the Cottage stay. For the Hostel, some rooms include a bicycle; rental may be available for others. If cycling is important to your trip, please mention it when you inquire and we will let you know what is available for your dates.

Longer Stays & Remote Work

Is Expo Hostel & Cottage good for longer stays or remote work?

Guests often stay for a week or more. The Hostel rooms are quiet and private. The Cottage has a full living space with room to work. Both options have Wi-Fi and kitchen access. Nishijin is calm, and the neighborhood is easy to live in without the constant busyness of more tourist-heavy parts of Kyoto.

Check-in & Inquiries

How does check-in work?

Check-in is done in person at the check-in office. We will be in touch before your arrival to confirm the details and coordinate timing. Please get in touch if you have any questions about arrival.

Can I ask for local recommendations?

Yes. The team lives nearby and is happy to share local recommendations when you check in — places to eat, quiet walks, morning routines, and things that do not make it onto most travel lists. Just ask when you arrive.

How can I book or ask questions?

Please send an inquiry through the contact form with your dates, number of guests, and which option — Hostel or Cottage — interests you. We will follow up with availability and anything else you need to know.
